Description
Get closer to the world of bioconstruction with the collaborative workshop between Rancho Úha, Granja Huitzilin and Viventierra: Self-Construction Laboratory learning the versatile and efficient technique known as bioconstruction with straw bales. You will obtain the basic knowledge to self-construct buildings in a fast and environmentally friendly way.

The workshop will be developed with the sequential stages of the adequacy of the walls, assembly of wooden enclosure, erection of load-bearing walls, placement of a roof for rainwater harvesting and the application of the first protective mud cover.

The straw bale workshop is designed to share with the attendees a self-constructive technique characterized by its speed of implementation, adaptability, simplicity and extremely accessible cost.

The straw bale technique is a method that uses the residues (stalks) of cereals such as wheat, sorghum and rye. The bio-constructions made with this method are seismic-resistant as well as fire-resistant due to a high compaction of the material and the applied coverings. The basic principles for self-building are learned in a few days and being a highly adaptable technique, it allows to encourage creativity to create both beautiful and very comfortable houses.

We will build on the knowledge and experiences of different individuals and collaborative relationships, all of whom are committed to the application, development and dissemination of bioconstructive techniques capable of providing decent housing while caring for the environment.

What you will learn

We will build an L-shaped straw bale building in Rancho Úha in the State of Guanajuato. At the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to erect structural walls made of straw bales, as well as design the necessary elements for a lightweight roof.

They will be provided with the necessary elements to self-construct straw bale buildings that are efficient in self-construction time, rational use of natural materials as well as being extremely comfortable due to their insulating capabilities (they retain heat inside the rooms in cold areas and are cool in hot areas by insulating us from the outside).

It is a workshop in which we will spend most of the time learning theoretical concepts while applying them with a multidisciplinary team.
The day to day teaching will be done through theory sessions covering a different topic until the complete syllabus is covered and the rest of the day will be spent working on the implementation of the design. There will be break periods and one hour for lunch.
